FROM THE LEMON TREE HOTEL, GUINDY, CHENNAI...................2

                   SILENT SUPERSTAR

The lobby and the Citrus Cafe at Lemon Tree Hotel, Guindy, Chennai were gleaming. Spotlessly clean. When I checked in last week, in the morning hours this is what had caught my attention. Soon on enquiry and a little probing, I came to know the secret of cleanliness in the public areas.

All the credit goes to Gnanavel a 20 year old Tamilian boy from Cuddalore. My respect for him got multiplied when I came to know that he is a Speech and Hearing Impaired person. His smile is infectious. His work habits are worth emulating. Sample this…..

He reaches the hotel around 9.30PM every day. Hits the shop floor at 10.00PM. By 11.00PM his job starts at the Citrus Cafe Restaurant.  By midnight, he will reach the Bar followed by Lobby and all other back areas. Believe it or not, this 20 year old boy handles the entire public area cleaning during night shift all alone.

"He is capable of handling even the floors all alone. But communication with the guests could be a problem. Hence we have deputed him in the public area. The good news is that he is trying to speak. If one can speak very loudly, he can listen also" says Jagat Chand, Assistant Manager - Housekeeping.

Gnanavel never says no whenever work is allotted to him, I am told. How much ever tough the task is, he will execute the same flawlessly once he takes charge.  One inimitable quality that I found profoundly appealing in him is this - he will complete the task allotted to him, no matter how much - and only then he will leave the hotel, certainly not before.

The Housekeeping wing of this hotel has another five Speech and Hearing Impaired heroes. Interestingly, the Housekeeping Desk is manned by two orthopedically challenged stars - Thilaka and Vinod. Thilaka has a golden voice; she also has big heart to serve the guests selflessly. Maybe I will meet Thilaka and Vinod during my next visit to this hotel.

10th pass Gnanavel had joined this hotel two years back. I am inspired by the Lemon Tree Group of Hotels – as they do provide employment to many a Speech and Hearing Impaired employees. No wonder, God is so kind to the Lemon Tree family. Businesswise, this group is growing by leaps and bounds.
Natural consequence of good deeds, as they say!
