FROM THE WESTIN HYDERABAD MINDSPACE, HYDERABAD

HUMILITY AND INDUSTRIOUSNESS - THE STORY OF MAZEED!

I have seen many a people leaving the hospitality industry quoting a variety of reasons. But here is a person who left his job in administration and chose Kitchen Stewarding in a hotel as his profession - and thereafter rose to become the Chief Steward at The Westin Hyderabad Mind Space. Two things to note would be - firstly this hotel has the largest inventory of rooms (427 rooms) in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Secondly at 31 years of age he happens to be the youngest Chief Steward in Hyderabad.

A graduate (BA in Public Administration) Abdul Mazeed had the dream to become a Web Designer or a Software Professional. He was born in a village in Khammam - 200 kms from Hyderabad. After completing his graduation he landed at Ameerpet and joined in a Software Training and Development firm. He joined as an Assistant in the administration wing and by the time he left this firm after 6 years he was already an Administration Executive.

"You will have to struggle. I will give you only three days. Think and let me know", a Westin employee had forewarned him. These words changed his life. In February 2011 he joined Westin Hyderabad as a Kitchen Stewarding Supervisor, with zero knowledge and background in Kitchen Stewarding.

"I never knew what is an ice cream scooper. But deep down in my heart I had already decided that if I get this job I should stick with Westin. I should earn a good name to live up to immaterial of what job I do" said Mazeed.

His hard work paid rich dividends. In October 2013, he became Assistant Chief Steward - got promoted as Chief Steward in November 2015. Today, he seamlessly facilitates with the F&B, production and service departments. The entire Kitchen Stewarding department rolls up to him. With three Supervisors and 40 Associates under him he ensures accident free operations and a healthy environment. Cutlery, crockery, dish/pot wash, chemicals, critical equipments, cleaning and sanitation, garbage retrieval/segregation to planning to hygiene audit... his area is very vast indeed. His team also includes two ladies. Jayamma and Lakshmi. Both have been working for the last six years.

Listen to what Rakesh Upadhyay, the Officiating General Manager has to say about Abdul Mazeed: "Humility may be a virtue; but for him, it is his competitive advantage. His knowledge on computers has ensured systematic processes in his area".

Says Steffan Dawson, F&B Director "Mazeed is a great role model to his Kitchen Stewarding team. Very hardworking and humble he is".

While Executive Chef Rakesh Anand quips:" Abdul is a great leader. One can see the impact of his attributes in his highly motivated team".

"You need lots of patience" when asked about the secret of his success, Abdul replied smilingly. He is married to Zareena Begum, who finds joy in private home tuitions.

Browsing the internet and travelling are his hobbies.
