MAVERICK GARDENER
Two things are playing in Joseph's mind right now. One is to grow an herbal
garden and the other is to create an open air Spa. This open
air Spa will be one where the guests can relax and unwind in a
natural setting while enjoying a massage- without their privacy getting
compromised.
M C Joseph (56) shared this with me during my recent stay at Le Meridian Kochi. He is the horticulture manager responsible for taking care of the 21 acres of land belonging to this iconic hotel at Kochi. Perhaps no other hotel in Kochi can claim to have such a massive land bank.
When I met Joseph for the first time in 2005, he was the ‘Garden Supervisor’ of the horticulture department. He has not changed a bit when I met him on my recent visit. He has the cheer and vigour of a college student still, the will power of a scientist and the energy of a bull. Indefatigable he is. Great contributor.
During my recent stay I thoroughly enjoyed the greenery in the hotel campus. The credit for that goes to Joseph and his fifteen member horticulture team of which five are women.
Joseph, who started his career as a gardener in AVT in Kochi, joined Le Meridian Kochi in 2001 as a gardener. The hotel was just one year old at that time. He has been instrumental in planting many a coconut saplings himself, improving the landscape, planting seasonal flowers, etc.
"For the last five years, we are maintaining a full-fledged vegetable garden as well. This is a very fulfilling mission for me", remarks M C Joseph, who is wedded to the greenery of this hotel.
Joseph has won the ‘Best Employee of the Year ‘Award twice -in the year 2007 and in 2011. Not over he has been also voted as the ‘Best Employee of the Month’ twice.
Married to Lourdh, Jospeh is blessed with two sons. Lijo (29) - a dental ceramic technician who is married and settled in Goa and Rijo - a Front Office Assistant in Abad Group of hotels in Kochi.
