FROM THE IMPERIAL HOTEL, NEW DELHI

JOVIAL JOSEPH

Joseph is there today?

This is the one of the most  frequently asked questions by the elite guests, celebrities and film stars at the shop floor of 1911, one of the most renowned restaurants in New Delhi. Location: Ground floor, The Imperial Hotel.

C.J. Joseph (54) Kerala born Kitchen Supervisor wedded to the Imperial is the face of this restaurant. Buffet guide, Omelette Chef...he wears many a caps. This five-time best employee award winner of this iconic hotel is also the load-bearing pillar of this swanky eatery. He is a great credit to the Chef Brigade of this hotel.

He is very friendly, caring and nurturing (one must see to believe, the celebrities flocking around him).At work, he never gets angry, always remains cool, calm and composed. Incredibly guest centric- fully focussed on the guest needs.

During the breakfast periods, he takes order directly from the guests, makes the Omelettes and serves flawlessly, using all the four pans at a time. That speaks volumes on his quick-footedness at the live counter. His memory is so sharp. Never he makes any mistakes with regard to the ingredients. He can make 15 different omelettes, plus he can masterfully craft any omelette as per the requirements of the guests.

“I can easily handle as many as 300 guests per breakfast session” quips Joseph with a smile.

After passing eighth standard, he came to Delhi searching for a job. That was in 1986. S.George, The Chief Security Officer, of this hotel offered him the job of a helper. Incidentally, both hail from the same village in Pathanamthitta, Kerala. As an apprentice, he impressed everyone with his hard work and commitment. Got confirmed in 1988. The next 3 years were very fulfilling: he lapped up three promotions in three years.

This resplendent culinary artist will report for work at midnight. Breakfast set up of 1911 restaurant is his main job.

Yes, presently I am staying in this hotel. I was delighted and impressed to the hilt on the elaborate and captivating buffet spread of this eatery.

“I will go home, after closing the restaurant for breakfast session…that is around 11.00am” says Joseph.

Married to Saramma, Joseph is blessed with two sons. Lijo and Jijo. All three are staying in Pathanamthitta, Kerala.

Says Vijay Wanchoo, Senior Executive Vice President & General Manager of this hotel

“JOSEPH THE OMELETTE MAN

Oh Joseph.

You create magic with your art.

Your style truly makes you stand apart.

Be it a fried egg or an omelette

You make simple things look great.

Your smile is your strongest virtue

Your style is a true virtue

God bless you”.
