MASTERFUL MANOJ
"Till
I finish my work".
This
was his reply when I asked him by when will he sign off for the day. This reply
came from Manoj Das (43) - Laundry Operator
at The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata.
In astrology, the
number 8 has some significance. Same is the case with Manoj. Every eight years
he has consistently lapped up the “Best Employee Award’ in a span of
twenty years. He has already won it thrice.
His co-workers at The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata are not to know that he will be soon completing two decades with the laundry department in the hotel industry. His first ‘Best Employee’ Award came in 1999 that was in his third year with The Park Kolkata. After eight years, ITC Sonar Kolkata honoured him with the same award. That was in 2007. This was followed by the “Best Employee Award’ from the Oberoi Grand in 2015. He had by then completed four years with The Oberoi Grand. For the last seven years, he is wedded to this hotel. Prior to this he spent three (The Park) and ten (ITC Sonar) years respectively at other two hotels in Kolkata.
7.00AM. That is the time Manoj Das hits the floor every day. All clothes will be checked by his hawk like eyes. Then he distributes the work to his 15 member team. That is the beginning of his daily operations. He liaises with the Engineering wing as well as the HR (for leave, weekly off, administration work etc related to laundry department). Four each of washing/drying/ pressing machines, one dry cleaning machine and a double loader calendar machine have an excellent relationship with Manoj. All machines live under his tutelage.

"Manoj is very focussed at work", says Asim Chakrabarti, the Laundry Manager
at The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata, "He is also very disciplined and loyal.
Every hotel in Kolkata has beckoned him with a job offer".
"l am very happy here. Everything is systematic and planned in our department. I love my job. In 2016, we had just one guest complaint. It was a wrong delivery (to the guest room). We have even re processed the shrunk clothes given by guests" says Manoj proudly, who is active in Face book as well as Instagram.
He stays in the hotel till the day's work is finished. Every evening between 9.00 to 11.00 PM, he spends his time at the Gym, near his home. Spending quality time with his family is what he likes the most.
